White House considering nationwide mask mandate as post-vaccine coronavirus spike grips nation

People high up in the administration of President Joe Biden are in talks with other top officials and so-called public health experts on whether to update the country’s mask mandate policies. The debate is being spurred on by the surge in infections connected to the post-vaccine delta variant of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).

Banner Health is Arizona’s largest health system. Nigella sativa (black seed) prevents covid-induced vascular damage, scientists conclude in published paper indexed by NIH

Sununu [NH] signs ‘medical freedom’ immunization bill

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire residents can’t be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to access public facilities, benefits or services under a bill signed into law by Gov. Chris Sununu.
Supporters say the bill signed this week establishes “medical freedom” by specifying that all residents have the “natural, essential and inherent right to bodily integrity, free from any threat or compulsion by government to accept an immunization.”
It does not, however, supersede the state law regarding vaccinations as a prerequisite for admission to school. That law lists seven required vaccinations but does not currently include the COVID-19 vaccine.
The new law also does not apply to county nursing homes, the state psychiatric hospital or other medical facilities operated by the state or other governmental bodies. And it allows mandatory immunizations in prisons and jails when there is a significant health threat.
U.S. will not lift travel restrictions, citing Delta variant, White House says
The United States will not lift any existing travel restrictions “at this point” due to concerns over the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant and the rising number of U.S. coronavirus cases, a White House official told Reuters.
The decision, which comes after a senior level White House meeting late Friday, means the long-running travel restrictions that have barred much of the world’s population from the United States since 2020 will not be lifted in the short term.

Missouri AG Sues Over St. Louis Area Mask Mandate

The attorney general in Missouri has sued in an effort to halt a mask mandate that took effect Monday in the St. Louis area amid a rise in COVID-19 cases that are burdening a growing number of hospitals around the state.
The mandate, one of the first to be reinstated in the country, requires everyone age 5 or older to wear masks in indoor public places and on public transportation in St. Louis city and St. Louis County even if they are vaccinated. Wearing masks outdoors is strongly encouraged, especially in group settings.
But the lawsuit said the mandates are “arbitrary and capricious because they require vaccinated individuals to wear masks, despite the CDC guidance that this is not necessary.” It also questions mandating children to wear masks in school, noting they are less likely to become seriously ill.

Rutgers Sent ‘False and Misleading’ Emails to Students About COVID Vaccine Mandate, Attorney Says

A New Jersey attorney last week accused Rutgers university officials of sending “false and misleading” communications to students about the university’s COVID-19 vaccine policy.
In a letter to Jay Hoffman, Rutgers senior vice president and general counsel, attorney Julio C. Gomez asked Hoffman to investigate the misleading communications and direct university officials to retract them.
Gomez, a graduate of Rutgers and Rutgers Law School, told Hoffman he wrote the letter on behalf of his two nieces and “about a dozen” other students currently enrolled at the university.
In his letter, Gomez alleged the university is misleading students about the deadline for complying with the vaccine mandate. He refers to Rutgers University Policy 10.3.14, Interim COVID-19 Immunization Record Requirement for Students, which states students are required to present evidence of COVID-19 immunization “at least 2 weeks prior to coming onto campus for any reason, including but not limited to moving into a residence hall, attending campus classes, and/or entering any campus building.”

Federal Law Doesn’t Prohibit COVID Vaccine Requirements, Justice Department Says
Justice Department lawyers have determined that federal law doesn’t prohibit public agencies and private businesses from requiring COVID-19 vaccines — even if the vaccines have only emergency use authorization, according to an opinion posted online Monday.
The opinion from the department’s Office of Legal Counsel paves the way for more federal agencies and businesses to require vaccinations.
